This should be simple -- but I must be missing something.I've numbered documents before. For example, create a 4 page word document. I want Page 3 to be the first page of numbering. I insert a section break (next page) at Page 3. I insert page numbers, making sure that 'continue from previous section' is unchecked. Word numbers the 4 page document 1-2-1-2. I don't want the first two pages (section 1) numbered!

If I delete the numbers in section 1, the numbers in section 2 also disappear. What am I missing??? BTW -- I have Word on both a PC and MAC and I've had the same problem with both. However, when I create a section break (next page) on both the first and second pages, it creates an extra page, which I can delete and the numbers work out ok -- i.e. No numbers until the 3rd page -- but, with section breaks after both the 1st and 2nd pages. You are correct, you do not need a section break after each page. When you unlink from a previous section, there are separate links for the header and footer. If you had unlinked the header, but put the page number in the footer, you would experience the issue you describe. In addition, if you use the Different First Page and/or Odd and Even options, each one of those must be unlinked as well.
